Throughout a people’s life, there are many individuals that make, shape and influence them into who they will become in the end. Whether it is a parent, a guardian, a teacher, a boss, or friend, those people are influential. In the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, the conflict and struggles Huck faces with the adults in the novel spurs on his development of self-awareness and maturity. First of all, at the start of the book, Huck is influenced by Miss Watson. She attempts to â€Å"civilize† Huck. â€Å"She put me in new clothes again, and I couldn’t do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up† (p11-12). The clothes symbolize a sense of imprisonment for Huck. He is so used to being in rags that are loose on him, that when Miss Watson cleans him up and dresses him in nicer, tighter fitting clothes, he does not feel like himself. After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers † Miss Watson is a very religious woman and believes that it is beneficial to Huck that he learn all that he can about religion. There is also hope that he will change from a wild child to a respectable young man. Huck is apposed to his o ld ways of being a rebel and doing what he wants, but at the same time he wants to become a respectable young man. Part of him does not like being told what to do, what to wear, and what he should know, but a part of him likes having the attention. So the fact that Miss Watson is taking time to try and fix his faults and care for him make Huck feel wanted by someone. Secondly, Huck’s father is a very important part of his life. â€Å"And looky here-you drop that school, you hear? I’ll learn people to bring up a boy to put on airs over his own father and let on to be better’n what he is. † Huck’s father is a jealous and cruel man. He does not want Huck to be smarter or more important than himself. This gives Huck a desire to be different than his father and to learn how to read and write. He does not like what his father has turned into, so the fact that he is able to write and read gives Huck a sense of hope. Hope that he will not turn into his father as he gets older. â€Å"By and by he rolled out and jumped up to his feet looking wild, and he see me and went for me. He chased me round and round the place with a clasp knife†¦Ã¢â‚¬  When Huck’s pap gets drunk, he becomes a mad man. It is these moments that Huck is most scared of his father. He is afraid that his father has lost himself completely and he is also scared for his own life. This is actually somewhat beneficial for Huck. He learns how to protect himself and how to get out of sticky situations. Lastly, Huck’s life is changes the most because of Jim. â€Å"It’s a dead man. Yes, indeed; naked, too. He’s ben shot in de back. I reck’n he’s ben dead two er three days. Come in, Huck, but doan’ look at his face-it’s too gashly. † Jim is protecting Huck from seeing the dead man and saving Huck from having nightmares. Like Miss Watson, Jim is looking out for Huck’s well-being. Even though Huck is very curious about who the dead man, he doesn’t make a big deal out of it. He understands that some things are just not meant to be seen, and he respects Jim decision on that. â€Å"I tried to make out to myself that I warn’t to blame, because I didn’t run Jim off from his rightful owner; but is warn’t no use, conscience up and says, every time, â€Å"But you knowed he was running for freedom, and you could ‘a’ paddled ashore and told somebody. † Huck is struggling with the decision of turning Jim in or not. Jim is his friend but Jim is also a runaway slave. In the end, Huck goes with what he knows is right, and does not turn Jim in. This shows that through all he has been through, Huck has grown in maturity. In conclusion, Huck becomes more mature and self-aware by experiencing conflict and going through struggles with the adults in â€Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He was taught how to be a gentleman by Miss Watson, self defense and how to not lose hope on his dreams because of his father and how to be a friend and to respect other’s decisions because of Jim. Each person made him stronger, and helped him find himself. As spoken by Eleanor Roosevelt, â€Å"A mature person is one who is does not think only in absolutes, who is able to be objective even when deeply stirred emotionally, who has learned that there is both good and bad in all people and all things, and who walks humbly and deals charitably. †

Two Party System - Why Democrats and Republicans Win The two party system is firmly rooted in American politics and has been since the first organized political movements  emerged in the late 1700s. The two party system in the United States is now dominated by the Republicans and the Democrats. But through history the  Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans, then the Democrats and the Whigs, have represented opposing political ideologies and campaigned against each other for seats at the local, state and federal levels. No third-party candidate has ever been elected to the White House, and very few have won seats in either the House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate. The most notable modern exception to the two party system is U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a socialist whose campaign for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination invigorated liberal members of the party. The closest any independent presidential candidate has come to being elected to the White House was  billionaire Texan Ross Perot, who won 19 percent of the popular vote in the 1992 election. So why is the two party system unbreakable in the United States? Why do Republicans and Democrats hold a lock on elected offices at all levels of government? Is there any hope for a third party to emerge or independent candidates to gain traction despite election laws that make it difficult for them to get on the ballot, organize and raise money?   Here are four  reasons the two party system is here to stay for a long, long time. 1. Most Americans Are Affiliated With a Major Party Yes, this is the most obvious explanation for why the two party system remains solidly intact: Voters want it that way. A majority of Americans is registered with  the Republican and the Democratic parties, and thats been true throughout modern history, according to public-opinion surveys conducted by the Gallup organization. It is true that the portion of voters who now consider themselves independent of either major party is larger than either the Republican and Democratic blocs alone. But those independent voters are disorganized and rarely reach a consensus on the many third-party candidates; instead, most independents tend to lean toward one of the major parties come election time, leaving only a small portion of truly independent, third-party voters. 2. Our Election System Favors a Two Party System The American system of electing representatives at all levels of government makes it almost impossible for a third party to take root. We have what are known as single-member districts in which there is only one victor. The winner of the popular vote in all 435 congressional districts, U.S. Senate races and state legislative contests  takes office, and the electoral losers get nothing. This winner-take-all method fosters a two-party system and differs dramatically from proportional representation elections in European democracies.   Duverger’s Law, named for the French sociologist Maurice Duverger, states that a majority vote on one ballot is conducive to a two-party system ...  Elections determined by a majority vote on one ballot literally pulverize third parties (and would do worse to fourth or fifth parties, if there were any; but none exist for this very reason). Even when a single ballot system operates with only two parties, the one that wins is favored, and the other suffers. In other words, voters tend to choose candidates who actually have a shot at winning instead of throwing their votes away on someone who will only get a small portion of the popular vote. By contrast, proportional representation elections held elsewhere in the world allow for more than one candidate to be chosen from each district, or for the selection of at-large candidates. For example, if the Republican candidates win 35 percent of the vote, they would control 35 percent of the seats in the delegation; if Democrats won 40 percent, they would represent 40 percent of the delegation; and if a third party such as the Libertarians or Greens won 10 percent of the vote, they would get to hold one in 10 seats. The basic principles underlying proportional representation elections are that all voters deserve representation and that all political groups in society deserve to be represented in our legislatures in proportion to their strength in the electorate. In other words, everyone should have the right to fair representation, the advocacy group FairVote states. 3. Its Tough for Third Parties to Get on the Ballot Third-party candidates have to clear greater hurdles to get on the ballot in many states, and its difficult to raise money and organize a campaign when youre busy gathering tens of thousands of signatures. Many states have closed primaries instead of open primaries, meaning only registered Republicans and Democrats can nominate candidates for the general election. That leaves third-party candidates at a significant disadvantage. Third party candidates have less time to file paperwork and must collect a greater number of signatures than do major party candidates in some states. 4. There Are Just Too Many Third Party Candidates There are third parties out there. And fourth parties. And fifth parties. There are, in fact, hundreds of small, obscure political parties and candidates who appear on ballots across the union in their names. But they represent a broad spectrum of political beliefs outside of the mainstream, and placing them all in a big tent would be impossible. In the 2016 presidential election alone, voters had dozens of third-party candidates to choose from if they were dissatisfied with Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. They could have voted instead for libertarian Gary Johnson; Jill Stein of the Green Party;  Darrell Castle of the Constitution Party; or Better for Americas Evan McMullin. There were socialist candidates, pro-marijuana candidates, prohibition candidates, reform candidates. The list goes on. But these obscure candidates suffer from a lack of  consensus, no common ideological  thread running through all of them. Simply put, theyre too splintered and disorganized to be credible alternatives to the major-party candidates.

They receive more privileges such as they can go to the prison yard, exercise room, and the library. They still strict security but they have more freedom. (Schmalleger, 2011) Minimum security prisons offer a number of programs for the prisoners. They offer services to help rehabilitate the prisoners. The primary force behind the minimum security is the prisoners’ own restraint. They are there because of their behavior and they have the choice to stay there and do well or get transferred to another level based on their behavior. (Schmalleger, 2011) These types of prisons are also classified as federal, state, women, and private prison’s. Even though every one of these institutions is different they are all there for the same reason. Prisons are made to house the most violent to the first time offenders. The concept of the institutions is to provide safety to the communities from these offenders. To keep control and keep them housed in a facility to spend out their sentence. (Schmalleger, 2011) Jail plays a very important role in our criminal justice system. Before an inmate gets sentenced to prison, they are often watched in jail to see how they react with others. Based on how they act in jail usually decides what kind of prisoner they will become. Jail is also used in our system for those spending less than a year in jail, to keep down overcrowding of prisons. They house individuals pending arraignment, readmit probation or parole, temporarily houses juveniles, the mentally ill, and bail bond violators. They also hold individuals for the military, they transfer inmates to their designated facility, and they also operate community-based programs. In conclusion all of the prisons and jails in our country work together like a fine oiled machine. They work together to ensure that an inmate gets from one place to another.
